Future Dutch roads made of recycled plastic will be like Legos
The Dutch city of Rotterdam may soon be the first in the world to have roads made of recycled plastic with waste recovered from the oceans around the world . The city is collaborating with the construction company VolkerWessels to devise a plan to revolutionize the road systems with modular plastic panels that are coupled together, removable according to needs, with easy access for repairs and a hollow space for basic infrastructures.

The ecological proposal is not only good because it uses plastic waste from the oceans and makes it useful, also because it replaces traditional asphalt. The production of asphalt accounts for 1.6 million tons of CO2 emissions per year, or 2% of all emissions from road transport. Plastic roads are not a completely new idea, Indian chemistry professor Rajagopalan Vasudevan has developed a method to convert recycled plastic into asphalt, Vancouver also paved its streets for some time with recycled plastic . But this only solves part of the problem.

The VolkerWessels roads would have an easy snap design, just like the Legos, which could be easily accessible for repairs. Roads could also be moved to different places, an unprecedented innovation that is especially ideal for sandy or swampy terrain in the Netherlands.
Inside the prefabricated bricks there would be a hollow space, for the creation of easily accessible infrastructure, electricity, telephone or any other type of supply that needs it (It would seem incredible not to see a street raised every month to replace or install new pipes). While the project is still under development, it is exciting to know that these creative approaches are being considered to address solutions to widespread environmental destruction.
